Ottawa puts $31.5M behind new terminal project at Inuvik, N.W.T. airport

The federal government will back a $42 million project to construct a new terminal building at the Inuvik Mike Zubko Airport in Northwest Territories.

Infrastructure Canada has agreed to spend $31.5 million on the project that will replace an aging air terminal with a modern facility. The Government of the Northwest Territories will provide the additional $10.5 million required.

Ottawa said the construction project in the town on the Mackenzie Delta, not far from the Arctic Ocean, will help create jobs and improve the capacity at the airport. Building efficiency and structural design capacity that will ensure the facility can adapt to climate change are also priorities.

Passenger and air carrier space encompass the main level of the planned airport, while the second storey will be partially dedicated to airport administration. Space for Nav Canada, which manages Canada’s airspace, has been carved out on levels two through five.
